Tattoos and Furniture Design

March 30, 2018 Andrea Wendel

This week in the studio I began a bench design that has been
in the back of my mind for a long time.
I am fascinated by tattoos and the "why’s" and what they mean
to the people that adorn themselves, permanently.
As the rebellious child that I “was”,
Yes! I would definitely have had a few,
If only to irritate and shock my mother :)

Tribal tattoos originated from various indigenous tribes around the world,
who use tattoos to depict social status, beliefs, and ceremonies.
Regardless of style, two things are staples in a tribal tattoo,
they are solid black and it involves a lot of lines.

For this bench, I focused on the tattoos of the
many tribes of the Polynesians.
I like the strong black lines. It feels strong and masculine
but with a female sensuality.
Below are a few of the symbols and meanings
that will be found on the Tat Bench

Next week I will start the
burning process
( one of my favorite
things to do),
then fine tune with more
sanding and details.

Til Next time,
"LIVE CREATiVELY"
xx
