Juxta what?

Juxtaposition is the placing of compositional elements side-by-side, with the intention of comparing or contrasting them.

I love the word. It is inherent in nature,  flowing water next to a soft muddy river's edge, soft grasses next to a hard jagged rock formation. I love to juxtapose elements in my work. Cool steel next to the warmth of undulating stone, adjacent to a roughly carved piece of wood, aside smooth glass. Patterns coincide with textures bringing  the work to life.

Using opposing elements of texture in everyday decor will create energy. Educate your eyes to see how your table top or garden can be enhanced by juxtaposing something smooth and shiny next to a weathered wood piece or water against a craggy stone. Move things around, experiment and have fun!

Til next week, xx
